Memoir of a boy growing up in the early '50s, in and out of institutions and foster homes. Sad and horrifying and absorbing. Should be required reading for any die-hard humanists running around because, apart from a handful of people, most everyone in the book behaves badly and makes everything worse. Reminded me of UNBROKEN, but mostly the parts you wanted to skim because they were so painful!
