The writer gets a little preachy at the end, but he does a very good job at remaining politically neutral about the war in Iraq. His concern was for the animals of Baghdad Zoo, the majority of whom suffered horrible deaths in the wake of the beginning of the war. The ones that remained were not in much better shape. This is the story of how he and a few dedicated US soldiers, Iraqi zoo employees, and various animal welfare groups came to the aid of some of the most defenseless victims of the war.
